Strathfield Council finally releases Dec 2021 Wetland Management Plan recommendations

Strathfield Council finally releases December 2021 Wetland Management Plan recommendations by Applied Ecology after freedom of information (GIPA) request from Friends of Mason Park Wetland.

Members of Friends of Mason Park Wetland Inc tried for a year to get Strathfield Council to release a report for public consultation by Applied Ecology that was submitted to Council in November 2021. All our attempts through official channels came to nothing, despite ongoing assurances from whoever we spoke to that it would be released. Finally, we applied for the release of this Mason Park Wetland Management Plan through a freedom of information (GIPA) request, which was granted in late January, 2023.

We are delighted to present this thorough and welcome document to our members and the rest of the community. To read it, please click here.

Of course, these are just words on paper/screen. After another year of doing nothing to address the ongoing deterioration of the wetland as a viable habitat for migratory shorebirds, urgent action to restore tidal flush from Powells Creek is now required. Wetland ecologists tell us (and told Applied Ecology and Strathfield Council) that this will rehabilitate the ecosystem and provide suitable food for migratory shorebirds and others.
